What do we talk about today?

In this space you will find the English version of the entry ¿De qué hablamos hoy?

We're getting closer to one of the most expected dates of the year for us children: HALLOWEEN. This date is relevant to us because we can become a hero or any of our favorite characters...

For this week, we have researched a little about this date's story:

HALLOWEEN

Worldwide, in this day children wear costumes, have fun and ask for candies with a special rhyme: Treat or trick!

But, where does this Halloween come from? The Samhain was a celtic celebration in ancient Ireland, the word meant "end of summer"; this was done to celebrate the end of crops and at the same time it was considered the end of the year and the beginning of the new year.

In this celebration the celts tributed their ancestors and wore masks to keep evil spirits away. In Scotland, on the other hand, young men wore white clothes and got their faces painted black and white.

Today, this celebration is very important in the United States, Canada and some Latin American countries. In these countries the meaning of the celebration is to give relevance to the extreme closeness of the world of living with the kingdom of dead.

We can also say that this celebration has come to our homes because of the ads and commerce of American cinema.

In that special night of October 31st, year after year, children run along the streets and malls dressed as witches, elves, ghosts, superheros, and wear fairy tales and cartoons customes.

BREASTFEEDING

Mom! Today we will talk about one of the most relevant issues of motherhood: Breastfeeding.

Importance of breastfeeding

According to Unicef, if every mom would breastfeed their babies immediately after they are born, about 1,5 million children would survive every year. Breast milk is the main nourishment during the first six months of a baby’s life and it complements their nutrition until they are about 24 months old, improving their nutritional conditions.

Main advantages for children

The first milk mom’s breasts produce right after labor is called colostrum, this is highly important since it protects children against infections, plus it is a natural laxative.
Breastfeeding definitely establishes a link so mom and baby can communicate, strengthens their tie and helps baby’s growth and development physically and intellectually.
It protects babies against illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, malnutrition, skin diseases, among others.

Main advantages for moms

It decreases the chances of developing ovarian or breast cancer.
It helps reduce postpartum hemorrhage
It is a money saving option since moms can refrain from buying baby bottles, milk, pacifiers, etc.

Summarizing

Breastfeeding is a way to integrate the family, to communicate and share love at home—mom, dad and the baby.

Task

Mom, make breastfeeding an opportunity to have me nearby and to share with you all of the love and care.
